Research grants 2025 : official results

We are delighted to announce the 2 winners for the 2025 SECEC Research Grants 👏

Congratulations to Dr Olof Wolf from Uppsala University and his team for the project entitled: “ScanDiLaC - Scandinavian RCT on Displaced Lateral Clavicle Fractures”.

There is insufficient evidence in the literature to guide us on treatment of displaced lateral clavicle fractures. The ScanDiLaC trial aims to compare outcomes after surgical and nonsurgical treatment for displaced lateral clavicle fractures in a Scandinavian multicenter pragmatic non-inferiority randomized controlled trial.

Congratulations to Dr Bettina Hochreiter, MD, Universitätsklinik Balgrist Zurich and her team for the project entitled : "Automatized Rotator Cuff Fatty Infiltration Quantification: Establishing Baseline Values and Predictive Thresholds for Re-Tears after Repair".

For the SECEC Community, the clinical relevance is immediate. This project tackles a well-known limitation in shoulder surgery—poor reproducibility and interpretability of Goutallier grading—by offering continuous, reproducible FI measurements. These data have the potential to enhance preoperative risk stratification, avoid overestimating pathology in overweight patients, improve patient counselling, and guide both surgical indications and technique selection.

SECEC is contributing a total of 20,000 EUR to these two promising initiatives which we hope will be of great benefit to our shoulder and elbow community in the future!

Thank you to the SECEC Research Committee for their thorough review of all applications!
